MSDHA invites you to attend our Mandatory Courses on HIV/AIDS, Domestic Violence and Medical Errors.  
Our courses are just in time before the end of the biennium.  This course will feature an international speaker and advocate Cathy Robinson Pickett. 

Cathy Robinson Pickett is a dynamic and entertaining speaker.  She has been honored by PEOPLE Magazine, by the United States as a Point of Light and numerous other organizations for her tireless advocacy work. 

HIV Educator and Advocate, 1992- present
Cathy has taught over 7,000 classes in 25 public school systems, 100 private schools, and college settings, health care facilities and for civic organizations, churches and prisons.
She provides HIV/AIDs training for licensed professionals including nurses, physicians, allied health professionals, and emergency management personnel.  Cathy presents this course and other guest lectures on HIV/AIDS topics for all ages and academic levels.  She has met with congressional members and staff on HIV-related issues and to lobby for patient rights. 

Co-Founder, Friends-Together, Inc.  Lakeland Florida 2000-present
Cathy Organizes and operates four to five three-day education camps yearly for 100 to 150 participants per camp as well as day retreats to people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.  She provides training and workshops in medicine adherence, pharmacy compliance, empowerment, advocacy, and networking at these camps and retreats.  She also writes grants and has received grants from organizations suck as Pfizer, Lakeland Community Foundation, GSK Pharmaceutical, Forsynth Foundation.  

Podcast Host, 2010-present
Cathy creates and produces a weekly national podcast, "Straight Talk With Cathy" geared toward the tough topics facing college students today (available on iTunes.)

Certified Smoking Cessation Trainer 2008-present
She leads community Quit Smoking Now classes for Central Florida Area Health Education Center.  

Certified Domestic Violence Trainer, 2008-present
Providing Domestic Violence Updates Cathy trains individuals in order to update their CE/CME requirements.  

Director/Adviser, Health Campus Coalition, Florida Southern College, 2004-2010
Cathy directed Healthy Campus Coalition peer education program at Florida Southern College and served as the Bacchus student organization adviser.  

United Nations NGO Delegate, United Nations Special Session on AIDS, New York, 2001
She helped formulate plans to distribute UN funds for HIV/AIDS education and prevention to NGOs worldwide.

CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

As a condition of the biennial renewal of a license, each licensee shall be required to complete continuing education courses as stated in Rule 64B5-12.013, Florida Administrative Code, which are relevant to, and which enhance the licensee's ability to practice. Licensees shall not be required to complete continuing education requirements during the biennium in which they receive initial licensure. The current biennium is March 1, 2010-February 28, 2012.

Dental hygienists must attain 24 hours of continuing education which must include:

  • 2 hours in the prevention of medical errors
  • 2 hours in domestic violence (every third biennium)
  • In addition to the 24 hours, each dental hygienist must complete a CPR course at the basic life support level, which includes training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at the basic support level, including one-rescuer and two-rescuer CPR for adults, children, and infants; the relief of foreign body airway obstructions for adults, children, and infants; the use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED); and the use of ambu-bags resulting in certification or recertification by the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross or an entity with equivalent requirements.

All credit hours must be earned within the biennium for which they are claimed. Do not send proof of CE hours unless you are audited. Audits will be conducted at random to insure compliance with CE requirements.

Important Updates

  • Effective May 11, 2005, dentists and dental hygienists are no longer required to complete instruction in laws, rules and ethics governing the practice of dentistry and dental hygiene to renew their license. However, this course may be taken and applied toward the continuing education requirements.
  • Domestic Violence can now be included in the 24 hours of required continuing education.
